We have some really amazing supporters, trustees and patrons – one of them is our lovely Simon Thomas who is the owner of Greenholme Carpets in Otley.
Simon has completed fundraisers for us previously and these have usually been on his trusty road bike. A keen cyclist Simon’s latest challenge for us was with his great friend Darren Hirst who is Director of the Julius Baer bank in Sheffield.
This time around the pair planned out a route that started in the centre of Sheffield and ended in Windermere at the latest lodge that the trust has purchased. The route took them across Yorkshire into Cumbria up hill and down dale and by the time they crossed the finish line they had lapped 130+ miles!
On the first day the pair endured extremely cold temperatures with rain, snow, hail and driving head winds being hurled at them however the downright tenacity of this pair kept them going alongside thoughts of all the families that they are helping.
“The Principle Trust supports so many disadvantaged families across Yorkshire, so our aim was to traverse the entire county from the South to the North. Every mile we cover and every penny we raised will help The Trust to support families from across the whole of the Yorkshire region. The challenge we have over these two days is nothing compared to what these families have to endure on a daily basis” – says Simon, trustee of the charity.
Day 1
Setting off from outside Sheffield Town Hall on 31st March the pair paused for pictures in front of the iconic building and later they were helped along their way by a real time interview on Radio Sheffield. The Trust staff tuned in from the warmth of their office to hear Simon and Darren’s account!
At the end of the long day the boys arrived into Skipton and were welcomed by staff and local patrons of the charity on the famous market cobbles. Tired and hungry with extremely numb rears they headed off for a hot bath and a lie down… they couldn’t even be tempted by a pint of Yorkshire Ale!
Day 2
Mother nature came up trumps for the boys on their second day… although it was cold the sun was shining and the dreadful wind from the day before had finally dropped. Aching backs and rears aside the pair were smiling and full of enthusiasm.
The start line was NYCC Water Street Primary School playground where the whole of the school staff and children came into the playground and created a massive wave of flags and balloons and lots of noise to set the boys off.
It was lovely to see that one of the children from the school was a little boy who the charity had previously helped…. Him and his family enjoyed a free week’s holiday in one of our Marton Mere caravans!
After the rapturous send off the boys were off again taking a route via the western edge of The Yorkshire Dales National Park to Gargrave and into Ingleton. They then crossed the North Yorkshire border into Cumbria before reaching White Cross Bay on the banks of Lake Windermere where two of our holiday lodges are situated right on the edge of the lake.
With staff on hand to welcome them and sandwiches and cake for sustenance the pair looked more than happy to finish and their only request… a cup of Yorkshire Tea!
