WHAT WE DO HEADER 100

we aim to make a positive and meaningful difference to children

At The Principle Trust Children’s Charity, we provide free respite breaks for children and families across Yorkshire who are facing some of life’s toughest challenges. This includes families living with mental health challenges, serious illness, disability, trauma, abuse or financial hardship – where the opportunity for a holiday is often simply out of reach.

From our fully equipped holiday homes in Blackpool, the Lake District and Filey, we offer safe, comfortable spaces where families can step away from daily pressures, spend quality time together, and begin to rest and recharge. For many, it’s not just a break, it’s a chance to reconnect, rebuild, and create precious memories that last a lifetime.

We work closely with a trusted network of referring partners, including schools, social services, hospices, and charities, who help us identify the children and families most in need of support.

Every break we provide is completely free of charge, made possible by the generosity of our supporters. With a 100% donations policy, every pound raised goes directly towards helping us continue our mission – giving children the chance to smile, families the chance to breathe, and everyone the chance to make memories that last.

Respite breaks can have a profound and lasting impact on both children and their families, particularly those facing ongoing challenges.

For many families, daily life can be intense and exhausting, whether due to caring for a child with complex medical needs, managing disabilities, coping with trauma or navigating financial hardship. A respite break offers something they often don’t get: time, space and relief.

For children, respite breaks:

  • Provide a chance to simply be a child – to play, explore and have fun away from medical routines or difficult home environments

  • Support emotional wellbeing by reducing stress, anxiety and feelings of isolation

  • Create positive experiences and memories that build confidence and happiness

For parents and carers, they:

  • Offer vital rest from the physical and emotional demands of caregiving

  • Reduce burnout and improve mental health

  • Allow quality time with their children in a relaxed, pressure-free environment

For the whole family, respite breaks:

  • Strengthen relationships and help families reconnect

  • Create lasting, happy memories during what may otherwise be a very difficult period

  • Provide a reset – helping families return home feeling recharged and better able to cope

In many cases, families tell us these breaks are life-changing – not just a holiday, but a moment of relief, joy and togetherness when they need it most.
