A Week That Changed Everything – Elizabeth’s Story

When families come to The Principle Trust Children’s Charity, they are often carrying far more than just exhaustion. Many are living with mental health challenges, grief, trauma, isolation and the constant pressure of simply getting through each day. For Elizabeth and her two young children from North Yorkshire, this was very much the case when they were referred to us by HomeStart Craven.

They had just come through the Covid lockdowns. Elizabeth had recently lost her mum to cancer. At the same time, she was navigating the aftermath of a traumatic separation after years of extreme coercive control. Suddenly, she was parenting alone, grieving deeply, and cut off from the support of friends and family.

Thank you Principle Trust for being there and offering some hope and light into my life when I had none

“I didn’t have the confidence to go very far with the children,” Elizabeth shared. “I had no family support locally and felt very isolated. I was finally out of a dreadful situation, but I felt lost and didn’t really know what to do.”

For families in this position, everyday life can feel overwhelming. Even something that should be joyful, like taking the children on holiday, can feel impossible. The emotional, practical and financial barriers are often too high.

That’s when a respite break can become life-changing.

Through the support of HomeStart Craven and The Principle Trust, Elizabeth and her children were offered a week-long stay in one of our Lake District respite homes at White Cross Bay in Windermere. She was also able to bring her sister for extra support, giving her the reassurance and confidence she needed to take that first step away.

What followed was far more than just a holiday.

For the first time in a long time, Elizabeth and her children were able to relax, feel safe and simply be together. They explored the beautiful surroundings, laughed, played, and enjoyed being a family again without fear or pressure.

“It made me realise how lucky I was to have escaped such a dreadful situation for the safety of not only myself, but my children,” she said. “The holiday was so lovely and gave us the time to be together as a family and share wonderful memories, which the children still talk about today.”

Respite breaks give families something priceless: breathing space. They offer time to process what they have been through, to rebuild bonds that have been strained by trauma, and to start imagining a future that feels hopeful again.

For Elizabeth, that week away marked the moment she began to find her way forward.

“Both HomeStart and The Principle Trust gave me a safe and happy place to go with my children,” she told us. “Thank you for offering some hope and light into my life when I had none.”

At The Principle Trust, we believe that these moments matter. A few days away can help a family feel human again. It can help children laugh freely, parents regain confidence, and everyone begin to heal.

Elizabeth’s story is just one of thousands, but it perfectly captures why we do what we do: to give families the space they need to breathe, recover, and create memories that will carry them through even the hardest times.
