Yorkshire Mind Charities Join Forces with The Principle Trust to Support Children’s Mental Health

At The Principle Trust Children’s Charity, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to rest, recharge and create happy memories with their family, especially during difficult times.

That’s why we are delighted to announce a new partnership with four leading Yorkshire mental health charities: Hull and East Yorkshire Mind, Leeds Mind, Bradford District and Craven Mind, and Rotherham & Barnsley Mind.

As new referring partners, these charities will now be able to identify and refer children and families who could benefit from a fully funded week-long respite break through The Principle Trust.

Supporting Children When They Need It Most

Children’s mental health continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing families across Yorkshire and beyond.

With increasing numbers of young people experiencing anxiety, stress, low self-esteem and other mental health challenges, there has never been a greater need for early, preventative support that helps families before difficulties escalate.

Through this new partnership, families supported by Hull & East Yorkshire Mind, Leeds Mind, Bradford District and Craven Mind, and Rotherham & Barnsley Mind will have access to free respite breaks at our family-friendly holiday homes in Filey, Blackpool and Windermere.

These breaks offer families the opportunity to step away from everyday pressures, spend quality time together and create positive memories that can have a lasting impact on their wellbeing.

More Than Just a Holiday

For many of the families referred to us, a holiday is simply out of reach.

Financial pressures, mental health challenges and difficult life circumstances can mean that family time, relaxation and opportunities to reconnect often take a back seat to simply getting through each day.

Our respite breaks provide a chance to change that.

They offer children the opportunity to experience new environments, enjoy quality family time and take a break from the challenges they may be facing. For parents and carers, they provide valuable time to rest, recharge and focus on making positive memories together.

As Jack Moore, Head of Marketing and External Relations at Hull & East Yorkshire Mind, explains:

“Nationally, one in five children aged five to 16 has a probable mental health disorder, reinforcing the importance of early, preventative and non-clinical support alongside traditional services.

A free week’s holiday might sound simple, but time away from everyday pressures can make a huge difference to a young person’s mental health and to the whole family.”

Strengthening Families Through Partnership

This collaboration is built on a shared understanding that emotional wellbeing is shaped by more than clinical support alone.

Providing families with opportunities to reconnect, reduce stress and experience positive moments together can play a vital role in improving resilience, confidence and overall wellbeing.

Isobel Keeling, Head of Children and Young People’s Services at Bradford District and Craven Mind, highlighted the significance of the partnership:

“For many of the families we work alongside, a holiday is not something they could ever imagine affording. To be able to offer this experience is truly life-changing for them and hopefully help them on a more positive pathway.”

Similarly, Leeds Mind sees the partnership as an important extension of the support they provide to families experiencing financial hardship and mental health challenges.

Ethan Foster, Economic Inclusion Services Manager at Leeds Mind, said:

“Support like that of The Principle Trust offers families the chance to reconnect, recharge and experience something positive together.”

Creating Lasting Impact Across Yorkshire

For families supported by Rotherham & Barnsley Mind, the opportunity to take a break from daily pressures can be transformative.

Frankie Parker, Children and Young Person Team Lead at Rotherham & Barnsley Mind, described the impact of the partnership:

“This initiative removes that barrier, providing a rare and much-needed opportunity to rest, recharge and reconnect. While a week away may seem like a simple offer, its impact is profound.”

At The Principle Trust, we couldn’t agree more.

Every respite break we provide is about far more than a holiday. It is about helping children feel happier, families feel stronger and giving people hope during difficult times.

Looking Ahead

Speaking about the new partnership, our founder Mike Davies MBE said:

“We are incredibly pleased to be working with Hull & East Yorkshire Mind, Leeds Mind, Bradford District and Craven Mind, and Rotherham & Barnsley Mind to further our support for children struggling with mental health.

The growing number of children struggling with their mental health demands a clearer, stronger response, and we hope this partnership will help provide crucial support for children across the region.”

We are incredibly proud to be working alongside these respected mental health charities and look forward to supporting even more children and families across Yorkshire in the years ahead.

Together, we can ensure that families facing mental health challenges have the opportunity to rest, reconnect and create memories that last a lifetime.
