Why We Refocused Our Mission: Responding to Yorkshire’s Children’s Mental Health Crisis

The latest report from the Children’s Commissioner for England paints a stark picture of children’s mental health across the country.

For the first time, more than one million children in England had an active referral to mental health services in a single year. Referrals have almost doubled since 2018 – 19, with demand continuing to rise faster than services can respond. Thousands of children are waiting months, and in some cases years, to access the support they need, while anxiety remains the most common reason for referral.

Behind every statistic is a child, a family and a story.

At The Principle Trust Children’s Charity, these are the families we meet every day.

That’s why, in Winter 2025, we made the decision to refocus our mission to better support children across Yorkshire who are facing mental health challenges alongside adversity such as trauma, poverty, abuse, disability, serious illness and bereavement.

We recognised that while specialist mental health services play a vital role, children and families also need opportunities to rest, reconnect and recover together. When a child is struggling with their mental wellbeing, the whole family can feel the impact. Parents and carers are often navigating appointments, financial pressures, uncertainty and emotional exhaustion, leaving little opportunity to simply enjoy being together.

A respite break cannot replace clinical mental health care, nor is it intended to. However, it can provide something equally important: space.

Space away from daily pressures. Space to reconnect as a family. Space to laugh, play, explore and create positive memories together.

Research consistently shows that positive family relationships, quality time together and access to restorative experiences can all contribute to children’s emotional wellbeing and resilience. For many of the families we support, a week away is the first opportunity they’ve had in years to experience that.

Our respite homes in Blackpool, Filey and the Lake District provide safe, welcoming environments where families can take a break from the challenges they face and focus on what matters most, being together.

The Children’s Commissioner’s report is a reminder that we all have a role to play in supporting children’s mental health. While the NHS and specialist services continue to face unprecedented demand, charities, schools, community organisations and local businesses can all contribute to creating environments where children feel supported, connected and hopeful.

As we celebrate our 15th anniversary, our commitment is stronger than ever. We will continue working alongside referral partners across Yorkshire to reach children facing adversity, provide life-changing respite breaks and help families create memories that last.

Because every child deserves moments of joy, connection and hope, especially when life feels at its hardest.
