Let’s hear it from…

The time has come to reflect upon 2020, and we would like our patrons to share their thoughts. Firstly, let’s hear from NHS nurse Lisa Finnit, Harrogate.

“The Principle Trust Children’s Charity respite breaks are an invaluable resource to families in need in the Craven area. As a Health Visitor for local families, I have witnessed the real difference these breaks make to children.

The holidays provided by The Principle Trust allow families, who, often through no fault of their own, are experiencing adverse life conditions, a chance to relax and switch off from the stress flight/fight response. Adverse childhood experiences such as domestic violence, parental separation, parental mental health issues, to name but a few, have very harmful effects on children. Children growing up in families with such adversity are more likely to experience long term health issues, poor self-esteem, mental health issues and partake in risk taking behaviors. This is because the stress they experience physically alters the child’s growing brains and affects their genetic predispositions. The respite breaks provide families caught in the hardships of life the opportunity to lift burdens for a short time and become refreshed which, in turn, enables them to parent more positively. This sense of relaxation lasts beyond the week’s respite and again improves the life for the child long after the break ends, particularly impacting positively on their brain development.

Another benefit of the respite holiday is that early childhood experiences stimulate the brain creating millions of connections and creates a new view of the world. It stimulates their senses and helps lay the foundations for learning. It is often the most vulnerable children who benefit from these holidays and they deserve to have something good happen in life amidst the chaos and adversity they often have to endure and that is the biggest reason I think The Principle Trust Children’s Charity is a fantastic charity. I would like to thank The Principle Trust on behalf of all my families that have benefited from a holiday for the important work they do to make life better for local children.”
