The Simpson Family Story

North Yorkshire County Council Children’s Services came to us with a family who seemed very much in need of a break away after difficult circumstances caring for their disabled son.

Their little boy cannot walk or communicate and requires constant care. He is reliant on his mother and father to care for him, which means the family didn’t have much time for quality time – both mum and dad found themselves missing time with their daughter too. Spending a lot of time attending various hospital appointments with a chaotic routine, the whole family needed a break.

We happily offered them a holiday in one of our holiday homes – specially adapted. These homes have wheelchair ramps, doors that have been widened to ensure wheelchair users can move around the home freely, a bathroom adapted into a wet room to make showering easier and a profiling bed and hoist.

We received this heart-warming thank you letter from the mum,

“The holiday has definitely helped us as a family unit, there were lots of activities on site that both children were able to access and enjoy. Our daughter was able to make friends with other children on holiday and join them in fun activities like the organised entertainment on offer and swimming. We could also split up (1 parent and 1 child) giving quality time to each child and access different entertainment on the holiday park site, knowing we were able to return easily to the facilities at the holiday home nearby if we needed to – which was particularly helpful for caring for our disabled son whilst we were away.

We thoroughly enjoyed all of the holiday, but the best part of our holiday was spending quality time together as a family and having such easy access to so many wonderful facilities which were close by to the holiday home.

It was fabulous for us to have the opportunity to go on this holiday, and it was not too far for us to travel to. Which is something we need to bear in mind whilst going anywhere. There was also lots to do in all weathers, which we were thankful for as the British Summertime is not something that can be relied upon. We had a truly wonderful time on holiday and would like to thank all at The Principle Trust Children’s Charity from the bottom of our hearts. This holiday was so special to us, you do not know how much opportunity has meant to us all! It was fantastic to see both our children smiling and enjoying themselves once again and doing what children should be doing and just having fun.”
