With October half term just around the corner, families across Yorkshire are looking forward to a well-earned break and a little bit of autumn magic.
From pumpkin carving to woodland walks, there’s no shortage of fun to be had across the region. But for many families, the school holidays can also bring added pressure. That’s why The Principle Trust Children’s Charity has rounded up a list of free family activities taking place this half term, helping ensure every family can enjoy making memories together, whatever their circumstances.
🎃 1. Pumpkin Carving Fun
Nothing says “Halloween” quite like pumpkin carving! Across Yorkshire, families can enjoy free carving and decorating events.
In Keighley, The Three Horses Pub is hosting a Halloween party with free pumpkin carving and fancy dress fun for local families.
Over in Leeds, Trinity Shopping Centre will be running spooky craft sessions throughout the week, including pumpkin decorating, face painting, and creative workshops.
Some events even provide pumpkins free of charge, others ask families to bring their own, but all promise a fantastic, seasonal atmosphere for children of all ages.
📚 2. Free Fun at Libraries and Museums
Yorkshire’s museums and libraries offer plenty of free entertainment this half term.
At Leeds City Museum, children can get hands-on with a huge spirograph artwork and meet artist Lesley Halliwell. Over in Bradford, Bolling Hall and Bradford Industrial Museum are hosting spooky storytelling and craft sessions, perfect for rainy afternoons.
These creative drop-in activities are a brilliant way to learn, play, and explore, without spending a penny.
🍂 3. Explore the Great Outdoors with the National Trust
For families who love the fresh air, Yorkshire’s National Trust sites are perfect for free outdoor adventures.
You can join a guided activity walk at Longshaw Estate in the Peak District, or explore the woodland trails at Hardcastle Crags near Hebden Bridge. Children can spot autumn wildlife, hunt for hidden pumpkins, and take part in the National Trust’s “50 Things To Do Before You’re 11¾” challenge.
It’s a wonderful (and free!) way to enjoy Yorkshire’s beautiful countryside this season.
🕸️ 4. Spooky Community Events
Yorkshire’s local communities are hosting a range of family-friendly Halloween events this half term.
In Leeds, Kirkgate Market will transform into a world of “Wizardry Fun”, featuring wand-making, balloon modelling, and magical games.
In Skipton, families can follow the Pumpkin Path Trail along the high street to discover spooky displays created by local shops and businesses.
In Copmanthorpe, the Recreation Centre is hosting a free-entry disco complete with a DJ, games, and face painting.
These local events are a great way to celebrate the season, meet new people, and have fun without breaking the bank.
🎨 5. Get Creative with Arts and Crafts
For a cosy day indoors, why not enjoy a free craft session?
Whitby and Guisborough libraries are running Halloween-themed craft events.
Wakefield Library is hosting a slime-making workshop.
In Sheffield, Cutlery Works is running creative family sessions, including monster puppet-making and trick-or-treat bag screen printing.
These activities are not only fun, but also help children express themselves and learn new skills.
