This International Day of Charity, we’re celebrating the incredible community of people and businesses behind The Principle Trust Children’s Charity and inviting even more people to become part of it.
International Day of Charity, marked each year on 5th September, is an opportunity to recognise the difference charities and their supporters make in communities around the world.
For us at The Principle Trust, it’s an opportunity to say something very simple: thank you.
Behind every child we support and every family that receives a respite break is a community of people who have chosen to make a difference.
Helping Yorkshire children facing adversity
The Principle Trust Children’s Charity was established in 2011 by our Founder, Mike Davies MBE, inspired by his own childhood experience of losing his mother to cancer when he was just five years old.
Today, we provide free, week-long respite breaks for children across Yorkshire facing adversity, including mental health challenges, trauma, abuse, poverty, serious illness and disabilities.
For the children we support, these breaks are so much more than a holiday.
They offer an opportunity to step away from the challenges and pressures of everyday life. They give children precious time to have fun and simply enjoy being a child, while giving families the space to rest, reconnect and create positive memories together.
And that time together is increasingly important.
More than one million children in England, around one in ten, now have an active referral to mental health services. As the challenges facing children and families continue to grow, so too does the importance of providing opportunities for families to reconnect and support their children’s wellbeing.
Behind every respite break is a community
Over the past 15 years, with the incredible generosity of our supporters, The Principle Trust has supported more than 6,300 children facing some of life’s toughest challenges and raised over £2.3 million to support our work.
But those numbers only tell part of our story.
Behind them are our Patrons, who make regular donations and provide us with vital ongoing support.
There are businesses across Yorkshire that choose us as their Charity of the Year, sponsor our events, engage their employees in fundraising and introduce us to their customers and networks.
There are people who decide to run a marathon, walk miles, climb mountains, jump out of aeroplanes or dream up their own fundraising challenges.
There are our wonderful volunteers, who give something equally valuable, their time.
And there are the people who donate, attend an event, share one of our social media posts, introduce us to somebody new or simply tell another person about the work we do.
Every contribution is different, but together they make our respite breaks possible.

“We have such a strong community around us and their support has been instrumental in helping us grow and deliver our mission over the past 15 years. Every act of support, no matter how big or small, helps us make a real difference.
“Our 15th anniversary is a celebration not just of what The Principle Trust has achieved, but of every person, business and organisation that has stood behind us. What we have learnt since starting is that to make lasting memories it really does take a community and we are incredibly grateful for everyone who has helped make that possible.”
